Working Title/Headline: | Internalised Misogyny in Fan Culture |
Elevator Pitch:(This should be no more than three sentences) | People see fan girls of music artists such as Taylor Swift, Harry Styles etc. and think ‘how dramatic, emotional and crazy.’ Yet fan boys of football get called ‘passionate, prideful and loyal.’ Why is this? |
Team members and roles: (if applicable) | Caitlin Baker (me): Writing script, filming, editing, writing article, creating magazine layout, etc. |
Context:Contextualise your topic. Why have you chosen this issue? Why does this story need to be told? Why are you a good person to tell it? | The treatment of fan girls is simply another excuse for individuals to be misogynistic without saying anything too offensive so that they manage to get away with it. I have witnessed football fan boys firsthand make fun of music artist fan girls. This makes no sense to me, aren’t we all equally as passionate about whoever we support whether it’s a football team or musician? As someone heavily involved in the fan girl community, I feel I am the correct person to acknowledge this issue. |
Scope and Angle:What is your angle on this story? What will you limit yourself to exploring? | Angle: Misogyny in Fan Culture Scope: I will be answering the question, why is the treatment and language used towards fan girls and fan boys so different? Specifically, fan girls of music artists and fan boys of football. I’m aware that at times football fan boys can also have a negative stereotype, such as being called ‘hooligans’ and ‘wife beaters’. However, that is a different conversation. I will not be talking about those stereotypes as it would create too wide of an angle but also because, I’m talking about football fans boys in comparison to music artist fan girls. My TV segment will consist of three fan girls and three fan boys in the TV studio being asked a series of the same questions to see how different they really are. My article will consist of research and quotes from interviews conducted in the TV studio from my sources, university lecturers and feminist organisations. |
Inspiration: The StoryWhat were your sources of inspiration for this story? What attracted you to it? Be specific and include links. | My article will take inspiration from several different sources, one main inspiration is this interview with Taylor Swift. She talks about how women and men have a different vocabulary to describe them. This is essentially the question I’m trying to answer, why are fan girls and boys treated and spoke to so differently? |
Inspiration: Style, Format and PresentationWhich writers/documentaries/podcasts are you taking influence from? What specific aspects of them will you be inspired by? Why do you think this would work well for your article/documentary/podcast? Include links. | My TV Segment will consist of several fan girls and boys being individually asked a set of questions in the TV studio. I will be taking inspiration from Martyna’s first year final project. However, the lighting will be brighter, and the individuals will be standing.![]() My magazine layout will take inspiration from the layout I produced for my year one final project; it helps that my project last year was also about feminism. This layout...![]() |
Target Audience:Who is the target audience for your podcast? Be Specific! Why would they be interested in this subject? | The target audience for this project is gen z. I personally feel that this would be an interesting topic for gen z as it's not often you don't find someone who's a fan of music or football. After being involved in the fan girl community myself, I can tell you that there's millions of us that feel angry. Angry that we get shamed for being a fan girl but boys get praised for being a fan boy of football. I feel that this particular group of people will find an interest in my project. |
Sources/Interviewees:Who are your proposed sources for this story? Why are they relevant and credible? How will you get in touch with them? | I will be getting in touch with Leora Hadas, a University of Nottingham professor; she is the perfect credible expert as she specialises in fan culture. I will be emailing her with the email provided on the university website. |
