Talking points:
1.Guest introduction
Can you please tell us and our listeners a bit about yourself?
What does ‘Relate Nottingham’ aim to do?
In your experience, have you ever seen any effects of hook-up culture?
Were they mainly negative or positive?
Do you have a personal opinion on hook-up culture?
2.Psychological effects
According to the American Psychological Association, a survey of 1,468 undergraduate students found that 82.6% reported negative mental and emotional consequences including embarrassment, loss of respect, and difficulties with maintaining steady relationships.
In another study from the American Psychological Association, 394 young adults with more depressive symptoms and greater feelings of loneliness who engaged in penetrative sex hook-ups subsequently reported a reduction in both depressive symptoms and feelings of loneliness
Do you think women and men have different emotional approach to hook-ups?
3.Physical effects
The American Psychological Association state that despite the prevalence of positive feelings, hook-ups can include negative outcomes, such as psychological injury, sexual violence, sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy.
When hooking up avoiding and avoiding barrier contraception, risk of gaining an STI rises by 30% (according to STDcheck.com)
And risk of pregnancy under the same circumstances is 20% (according to self.com)
Do you think men and women worry equally about the physical consequences?
