Working Title: How does a feminist survive social media?
Elevator Pitch: Cliché and Taboo you say? I think not. Explore feminism from the toxicity of the internet to asking if feminists should take a step back, with two best friends sharing their experience of being a woman in 2022 with supporting guests from the UoN feminism society.
Team members and roles: Caitlin Baker (Host) & Martyna Smoniewska (Host)
Context: Social media has a unique way of demonizing feminism that we'd like to debunk. We want to explore the evolution of feminism through social medias eyes and see, how does a feminist survive social media? We also want to raise awareness of why feminism is crucial and has always been crucial. We are good people to tell this story as we’re both women who advocate for intersectional feminism.
Scope and Angle: We are going to explore the toxicity of the internet, stereotypes, should feminists take a step back?, and how a feminist deals with their mental health.
Inspiration (The Story): I am personally an intersectional feminist and see too many women disregarding feminism, as if they’re scared of being called one due to the negative stereotypes. I want to show people that feminism is a community that is the embodiment of empowerment, not something to fear or disregard to fit in. I also see feminists being hated online too often, myself included. I would like to share how social media has shaped feminism over the years and how it effects us in the long term.
Inspiration (Style, Format and Presentation): I will be taking inspiration from the ‘Saving Grace’ podcast. Grace makes her guests feel at ease, you can tell by the manner that they speak and their body language. Grace is also witty and quick with a joke which I think is a good attribute as it helps the conversation flow and makes the guest feel at ease. Our topic is feminism which can be a serious political topic to touch upon, so light-hearted jokes from our own experiences can make the podcast seem less tense and awkward for both the guest and listener.
Target Audience: I want to show women of any age the online version of feminism and that a feminist is something you should proudly call yourself and advocate. I would also like men of any age to listen and understand the oppression women have and still do face. I would like men to listen and recognise their privilege. Too many men, in my experience, see feminism as a joke and I'd like to change that. Overall, I'd like men and women to see how social media demonizes feminism and how a feminist can protect their mental health.
Sources/Interviewees: Feminism society at the University of Nottingham. They are relevant to this podcast as they are part of a feminist society meaning they will have the facts and experience. I will email the feminism society from their website.
